About this deal

This genuine ‘lost classic’ is now available again on heavyweight vinyl, with original artwork – printed inner sleeve with lyrics and credits. The fact that Talk Talk started as a New Wave band and opened for Duran Duran on tour was more a case of mismarketing than an expression of intent by the band. If there’s anyone here who hasn’t really done Talk Talk yet their 5 albums would be a great project.

A Life (1895 – 1915), which has been referred to as “the album’s epic centrepiece” refers to Roland Leighton (1895–1915), a British soldier and poet who was the fiancé of Vera Brittain at the time of his death in World War I. The book is available in two distinct editions, both featuring a cover design created by long-time Talk Talk collaborator James Marsh. After that, a seven year gap before his last work, a self titled solo effort originally intended to be a Talk Talk album titled Mountains of the Moon, and that was that – twenty years of silence was its only follow up. In his first interviews, Hollis references jazz greats and classical music immortals behind Talk Talk’s inspiration and ambition. In a mere eight years and five albums, Talk Talk undertook a transformation unprecedented in popular music history.I’m tempted, but hesitent because I’m too flighty and would probably lose interest (or forget) before I got to the end. Hollis’ musical and spiritual quest could never have happened if it wasn’t for the collaborators around him. Ben Wardle knows the music industry’s intricacies - he was a talent spotter for Warner and the creator of indie label Indolent. For the first time A Perfect Silence explains the realities and explodes the myths surrounding Hollis and Talk Talk's career, and in doing so reveals the working patterns, sense of humour and desire for privacy of the man himself.

After the solo album, Hollis would continue composing for woodwinds on his own and briefly look into film scoring. Among the interviewees for this book are Simon Brenner, producer Rhett Davies, Phill Brown, James Marsh, musical collaborators George Page, Phil Ramocon, Martin Ditcham, Dominic Miller, Mark Feltham, Johnny Turnbull, Robbie McIntosh and others.

A new generation of musicians led by Guy Garvey of Elbow and Thom Yorke of Radiohead frequently referenced the band and cited Spirit of Eden (1988) as a totemic work. In his ruthlessly honest pursuit of a musical vision that held no compromise, this biography is a testament to the gifts and costs of this artistic pursuit. Mark Hollis was so much more than the hits ‘It’s My Life’ or ‘Life’s What You Make It’, and A Perfect Silence enjoyably and meticulously gives us that insight.

Two years before he died from cancer, at the age of 64 in February 2019, Mark Hollis and his wife moved from west London to the East Sussex market town of Heathfield, where they bought a house at the end of a secluded track. Ed was many things to many people, but most importantly, Ed’s love and knowledge of music and his eclectic music collection would be the spark that fired up Hollis. This sumptuous top quality book is brought to you by the same people who produced the recent top notch tomes on Jethro Tull and ELP, which should be recommendation enough before we even begin!
