In Escape to Gwrych Castle: A Jewish Refugee Story (U of Wales Press, 2023), Andrew Hesketh explores the lesser-told history of the children who lived in this North Wales castle, bringing together their personal memories and experiences to create a unique picture of their experiences. During the Second World War, the castle - which was built in the early 1800s - acted as a refuge for 180 Jewish children who had come to Britain as part of the Kindertransport effort. Escape to Gwrych Castle, based heavily on the memories and words of the children who were there, also charts how the young refugees gained confidence in other ways. Rabbi Sperber initiated educational programmes that focused heavily on developing the children’s religious knowledge and understanding. Despite this, the bond that was forming between the Jews of Gwrych and the Welsh of Abergele, could not be tarnished.Gwrych Castle provided the perfect environment, being set in a rural area which is, of course, perfect for farming.
