If you’re planning to visit the Peak District National Park in England and are looking for a place to camp, you’ll find dozens of excellent options. One of these is the Middle Hills Farm Campground, which can be found in Matlock, Derbyshire. The 40-acre site is ideal for tent, caravan, and motor home camping and there’s also an area for caravan storage. Electric hook-ups are available too and dogs are welcome as long as they’re on a leash.
Middle Hills Farm is family owned and operated and is also quite close to the charming towns of Buxton, Bakewell, and Ashbourne. The campground is in an ideal location for those who want to explore the beauty of the Peak District National Park, the surrounding countryside and local villages, towns, and attractions. There are several trails in the area for hiking with one of the most popular of them being the High Peak Trail. When you reach this trail, you’ll also be able to rent bicycles.

Since the campground is a farm, there are several animals on hand such as ponies and pigs as well as a friendly goat named Merlin. Children of all ages will enjoy learning about the animals and there’s also a play area for them to enjoy. If you’d like to experience some of the local dishes there’s a nearby pub within walking distance which serves up homemade cuisine.
You can also cook on site if you prefer as campfires are allowed if you take a fire basket or fire pit with you on your trip. If you get to the site and find you’ve left something at home you’ll find a small shop at the farm which sells camping equipment and other basic items which you might need. Once you’ve settled in, the ground is a great base to visit many of the local sites and attractions.
These include the Heights of Abraham, the Carsington Reservoir, Gullivers Kingdom, Chatsworth House, Dovedale, Haddon Hall, Lathkill Dale, the Crich Tramway Museum, the High Peak and Tissington Trails, the National Stone Centre, the Peak Rail Steam Trains, Wirksworth Heritage Centre, the Red House Carriage Museum, Caudwell’s Mill, Bakewell Pudding Shop, and Alton Towers.
Middle Hills Farm Campground has all of the amenities you need on a camping trip, such as showers, washrooms, dishwashing facilities, a fridge and freezer, and a chemical disposal. For the adventurous types who enjoy outdoor activities, there are plenty of them to be found in the surrounding area. These include water sports, boating, tennis, golf, indoor and outdoor swimming, horseback riding, and cycling.
The High Peak and the Tissington Trails are well known and very popular. These are two former railway routes that have been converted to trails for hikers, cyclists, and horseback riders. The High Peak Trail is 17 miles in total length and the Tissington Trail is 13 miles long. These trails provide some fantastic views of the Peak District Park and you’ll find some excellent picnic sites along the way.
You can also rent bikes at Ashbourne, Mapleton Lane, and Parsley Hay. The trails are relatively level and quite firm, making them fine for wheelchairs as well. These trails and the entire Peak District are definitely worth exploring, as it’s one of Britain’s most scenic areas.
