About this deal

If anything, the author tries to put an awful lot into this volume with the myths and the addiction problem, the enquiry takes second place sometimes. As for the solution of the case, I had a vague sense that it was going in this direction and I was not far from the truth.

A small-town murder. A big city detective. Can she unravel the gruesome trail of clues before the killer strikes again? I loved how Welsh culture and folklore was integral to this story, it gave such added value to this book. It was the quality of the detail that impressed me, it was not the obvious tourist highlights but obscure nuggets like the Demon of Cerrigydrudion. I loved the strong Welsh identity that this novel supported and shall ignore the little dig about the people of Cardiff.

Schedules have yet to be agreed, due to the Covid crisis, but there are hopes filming could take place next summer ready for a 2022 release. It is probably just me, but I like to make an early connection with the main character and this didn't help. Having been born in Liverpool, grown up in the Wirral, and spending many childhood weekends and holidays in North Wales with both my own parents and later my own kids, I found the mention of so many Welsh place names quite nostalgic. Not kean on her attempt at Scouse accents though, but very few can get that spot on to a proper Scouser 😆

A deal has been agreed to film the first of Simon McCleave’s “Killing” series in Snowdonia and north east Wales. All feature DI Ruth Hunter, whose character transferred to North Wales Police after almost 25 years with the London Metropolitan. The heroine is about as charismatic as a cardboard box, and almost as interesting too. The hero—perhaps—is a chronically angry alcoholic racist, so is even less likeable. I felt more connection to the CID car. At least I know the make, model, colour, speed capability and light arrangement...much as I don’t care about it. Netflix is among the distributors interested in the project and a “high profile” actress is being lined up to play the part of DI Ruth Hunter, the book’s main protagonist. Fortunately, she has a supportive team of competent staff by her side. The second in command, DS Evans, is knowledgeable on the local landscape, and through his connections, the team is able to launch an investigation. Ruth has a long list of suspects to work through, so she works tirelessly to unravel the mystery. When a second body shows up with the same cryptic markings, Ruth is convinced that she has to rethink her steps to stop the ruthless killer. Can DI Ruth solve this case fast enough to prevent another killing? What is it about this case that has her so unsettled?

Publication Order of DC Ruth Hunter Murder File Books

This book is so English, it hurts. This is a very strangely written book with some stinky red herrings that were and weren't obvious in the end. Research tells me that this book was published last year, which means the subsequent novels have all been published straight after. It's got to be the first book ever set in Wales where the English interlopers are hardly confronted by the infamous Welsh chip and also the first book where an Englishwoman can pronounce Welsh phrases and place names, without anyone correcting her. In her defence, she had spent some time in Wales as a kid, but Welsh is really hard.
